President Biden's Executive Order on AI

In October 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden signed a long-awaited 'Executive Order on the Safe, Secure, and Trustworthy Development and Use of Artificial Intelligence'. The 63-page document addressed multiple concerns, including the risks posed by the most powerful AI systems, the impacts of automation on the labor market, and how AI could infringe upon civil rights and privacy.

The document addresses various areas of safe and responsible AI practices, including:

• Enforcing consumer protection laws and enacting safeguards for AI to prevent fraud, bias, discrimination, and privacy infringement. 
• Conducting due diligence on third-party AI services and clarifying transparency requirements. 
• Using disaggregated data and representative population data sets to develop and monitor new and existing AI models for discrimination and bias. 
• Monitoring long-term safety and performance of AI-enabled technologies in the health and human services sector.
